Network Engineer Apprenticeship - Level 4

The primary role of a Network Engineer is to design, install, maintain and support communication networks within an organisation or between organisations. Network Engineers need to maintain high levels of operation of communication networks in order to provide maximum performance and availability for their users, such as staff, clients, customers and suppliers. They will understand network configuration, cloud, network administration and monitoring tools, and be able to give technical advice and guidance.

Apprenticeships are flexible and designed to offer a structured program of learning to fit around the needs of the individual and the employer. Learning takes place mainly during employment through the development of on the job skills supported by off the job training one day week which will take place at Kingston College.

  • Entry Requirements


    Either a level 3 apprenticeship, A levels; or other relevant qualifications; relevant experience and/or an aptitude test with a focus on functional maths. GCSE Mathematics and English at Grade A*-C or 4-9 and suitable employment.

  • Course Content


    Apprentice will develop the necessary Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours to be a competent Network Engineer

    • Understands and applies the principles of networking, protocols and associated technologies (specifically this should include the latest published versions of OSI layer model, IP, TCP/IP, routing and switching, WANs, LANs)
    • Understands and applies the applied maths required to be a network engineer (e.g. algorithms, data, binary, probability and statistics)
    • Understands the causes and consequences of system failure including load balance and storage protocols and responds appropriately
    • Understands the architecture of a typical business IT system, including hardware, OS, server, virtualisation, middleware and applications
    • Understands and responds to security threats, firewalls and vulnerabilities

    This apprenticeship is recognised for entry onto the register of IT Technicians confirming SFIA level 3 professional competence and those completing the apprenticeship are eligible to apply for registration.

  • Course Structure


    The course is split into a number of phases:

    On-programme training and development takes place during this part of the apprenticeship, with apprentices attending college one day a week plus assessment in the workplace. During this time, apprentices will develop a portfolio. During their training, apprentices will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected from a competent Network Engineer.

    End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage that an apprentice goes through to complete their apprenticeship. The apprentice must show their learning to an independent end-point assessor and the overall grade available is distinction, pass or fail.

    The apprenticeship duration is a minimum of 24 months plus EPA. One day a week at College, with a minimum four days per week employed in suitable employment.

    The apprentice has to successfully achieve their End Point Assessment (EPA) which includes;

    • Knowledge test - multiple choice exam paper,
    • Practical test and Interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.
