Additional Learning Support

Help is available if you have (or think you have) a learning difficulty, disability or medical condition. This includes the disabilities such as dyslexia, autism, Asperger’s, hearing loss, visual impairment and physical disabilities. You are welcome to speak informally to any of the Learning Support team about your needs.

The Additional Learning Support  (ALS) Team is a group of specialist tutors and experienced Learning Support Mentors who provides an essential service to support the College’s commitment to equality and diversity and to enhance the learning experience of our students.

If you have a learning difficulty, disability or medical condition, or think you may have, please give details on your application form or at your interview, or by contacting Learning Support directly. It is also important to tell us if you had special examination arrangements at school, such as the use of a laptop or extra time.

Learning Support

The ALS team provides a wide range of support which includes in-class support, small group support, 1:1 support and a drop-in service. All of these are targeted to support and help you achieve your goals while at the College.

Please note that whilst the College endeavours to support all learners, we are not able to offer "Personal Care/Hygiene Services"

Specialist Equipment and Software

There are laptops which may be available for use by identified learners  in the classroom or at home. Other equipment such as voice recorders, text enlargers and specialist assistive software can also be provided.

Special Arrangements for Exams

Some students may be entitled to access arrangements for exams. Such arrangements may include extra time, rest breaks, a reader, scribe or the use of a laptop, a small or separate room. Testing for these arrangements takes place before the end of November for winter exams and before the end of January for summer exams. If you have received examination concessions at a previous school or college please come to the Additional Learning Support Centre at Kingston Hall Road, Room G75 to reassess and update your access arrangement. If you have never had exam concessions an assessment can be arranged and, if you qualify, a report will be generated and arrangements applied for.
