Supporting Progression and Nurturing Development at Kingston College

Lauren in the Arena Gym 08 January, 2018 Lauren in the Arena Gym

Lauren Pickett began her incredible journey at Kingston College in 2014 as a Level 1 learner and in 2017 completed our Level 3 Personal Trainer course. Lauren has now set up her own successful Personal Trainer business, Pickett Fitness, is enjoying a successful career as a professional footballer with Tottenham Hotspur Ladies and is also employed as a full time member of staff in the College’s Arena Gym.

After leaving school at 16, Lauren enrolled with us on the Level 1 Coaching & Leadership course. On successful completion Lauren studied our Level 2 Coaching and Leadership course followed by the Level 3 Fitness & Personal Training course.

We caught up with Lauren during a break from her job as a Recreation Assistant in our state-of-the-art Arena Gym.

Showing a maturity that belies her years, Lauren believes the reason for her remarkable success was down to strategic thinking and forward-planning: “I thought about what I really wanted to do in the future and made a decision on a career I wished to succeed in. Personally I am sport driven, so I thought of all the pros and cons and knew what course would suit me: I always wanted to become a Personal Trainer. I felt that if I had a plan going forward whilst I was still young, I’d be driven to be successful. I have been focused on what I want to achieve and haven’t let any distractions get in my way.”

Offering advice to current students she said: “Whatever course you wish to do, make sure you work hard outside of college hours. Make time to complete your assignments way before the deadline; otherwise you’ll feel stressed and worried about not handing them in on time. Some courses require end of year exams, so throughout the year keep up on all of your revision and don’t leave it until the last minute. If you’re finding the course too hard never give up and keep persevering until the end.

Of her time studying here Lauren continued: “I had loads of opportunities which I am very grateful for and during my first year I played for the women’s football academy. Once I left school I knew I wanted to play football and study alongside. Whilst studying my fitness instructor course I was part of the US Girls scheme and I began leading gym inductions to new gym members. We’re very lucky to have great facilities here, especially the gym. During my final year I completed my Personal Training qualification which helped me gain loads of confidence and I was also part of the PT Academy. I had the opportunity to lead sessions to internal and external clients and was invited to a Royal Bank of Scotland Employability Conference in London where I spoke to students about Personal Training, encouraging them to look into a fitness career.

“All the teachers during my time at college were great! They will push you in the best possible way and help you accomplish the grade you want to achieve. I had an amazing tutor, Lisa Boland, who is very intelligent and knowledgeable. Lisa supported me throughout and got the best out of me and certainly helped me get to where I am today, so I can’t thank her enough. I made a lovely bunch of friends throughout my time here.

“After completing my three years of study, I was offered a job in Arena Sports and have been working here since September 2017. I love my job and enjoying working with all the staff members.”
