Apprenticeship in Engineering - Improving Operational Performance

Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to work for an employer, earn a salary and at the same time study to gain a nationally recognised qualification whilst gaining valuable workplace skills and experience. Course Content

The unit content of each NVQ can be selected to meet the needs of employers and their individual apprentices.

  • NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations including a minimum of six technical units.
  • BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Engineering
  • Functional Skills in Mathematics and English
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights

Assessment is largely through the production of portfolios of evidence, which include the achievement of practical tasks, observations, oral and written questions and answers and assignments. Functional Skills are assessed by examination.

Entry Requirements

As this is an employer driven course, employment in an appropriate engineering organisation is required.
Entry requirements are dependent on each individual employer, usually a minimum of five GCSEs at grade A* to C/9-4 including Mathematics and English Language. In addition a GSCE at A*to C/9-4 in Science or a BTEC Level 2 or Extended Diploma in Engineering or other equivalent qualification is an advantage. A keen interest in the design and manufacture of products or electro-mechanical engineering maintenance is essential.

Duration and Delivery

1 year with off the job full time industrial training in the College Industrial Training Centre is the preferred route for the first 40 weeks of the programme. Alternatively this can take place in the workplace providing the employer has the resources to undertake the foundation stage of training.

Progression

The next stage of the training is an Advanced Apprenticeship which takes place in the workplace with attendance at College on a day release basis once a week to complete the technical certificate requirements of the scheme.

Additional Information

The Skills Funding Agency support the scheme. Additional costs for equipment and training will be given at advice and guidance sessions. It is a requirement that apprentices are employed in order to participate in the scheme.

How can taking on an Apprentice help your business?
The Apprenticeship framework is designed to meet the needs of employers and to provide a vocational pathway into a profession.  Intermediate level apprentices will train in roles appropriate to their chosen profession, learning on the job practical skills working at a business four days and attending college one day each week.  The duration of an apprenticeship course is a minimum of 12 months.
All Apprenticeship frameworks are designed to provide apprentices with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to perform their job role and to support their future progressions.  Apprenticeships are an ideal way to help your business harness fresh new talent.

What do you need to know?
Apprenticeships can be suitable for either a new employee or an existing member of staff.  They typically involve four days a week on the job training and one day a week at college.  You will be responsible for the apprentice’s wages which, from October 2015, will be £132 per week.

What qualifications do we offer?
An Apprenticeship consists of:

  • An appropriate-level Knowledge Certificate (usually level 2 or level 3).
  • An NVQ practical qualification (usually level 2 or level 3).
  • Functional Skills qualification (if the candidate has not previously achieved a GCSE grade C in English and Maths).

  • Personal learning and thinking skills

Cost
16-18 year olds are fully funded by the College
For those aged 19+ an Employer Contribution will be required
An Employer Grant of £1,500 is available for those eligible.
