You'll study midwifery, physiology, study skills, social psychology, sociology, English, and maths. Many approaches to learning are used including individual and small/large group work. Academic and tutorial support is given throughout the course. Health and social care courses like this open up a huge range of career options to you.

If you're an international student, please note that many UK universities will not accept you for a midwifery degree if you are here on a visa or have not been a resident for more than three years. You will also need to have paid or voluntary experience within health and social care.

For 22/23 the course will run on Mondays 11.30-5.15 and Tuesdays 9.30-5.30. You will need a significant amount of time outside of class to complete the assignments in order to meet course work deadlines.

If you already have a level 3 qualification, or are aged 24+ then you will need to apply for the Advanced Learner Loan to pay the tuition fees, and this is deleted once you progress to university.

This is a very successful course and all of our students progress to university to study their chosen pathway. Many universities require GCSE in Science as part of the entry requirements for a Midwifery degree.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    Candidates are required to have GCSE English Language at grade C/4 or above or English Functional Skills Level 2. Maths is requried at a minimum grade D/3

    If you do not have GCSE Maths at grade C/4 you may be given the opportunity to study this subject alongside your Access Diploma to achieve a grade 4 or above.

  • Course Content


    Anatomy & Physiology units include Cells, Anatomy & Physiology, Disease & Immunity, The Reproductive System and Transport & Respiration.

    The Sociology/Psychology module includes units such as The Role of the Health & Social Care Professional, Communication Skills in a Professional Setting and Health & Illness, Ethical Dilemmas and Perspectives in Psychology.

    In the English/Study Skills module you will work on units to improve your academic skills such as Finding & Reading Information, Writing Standard English, essay Writing and Reading & Comprehension of Texts.

    All learners must complete a maths unit - Arithmetic Skills for Health Studies.

  • Progression Next Steps


    Most students apply for a Midwifery degree, but you could also apply for public health, early childhood studies, or even a degree is psychology. The Awarding Body - OCNLR - has a number of progression agreements in place with local universities which means that you are guaranteed an interview if you meet the entry criteria.

  • Course Structure


    You will study a number of units within each course module in order to achieve the 60 credits needed to complete the course successfully. The course will be delivered on-site, face to face. We do not anticipate any remote lessons.

    There is an emphasis on active learning in all lessons and we value the contributions of learners because you can draw on your life and work experience.

    You will meet regularly with the Course Leader for group and 1:1 tutorials to help you apply to university and to monitor your attendance, punctuality and progress.

  • Assessment Details


    Assessments take place throughout the course with essays, assignments, presentations, tests and exams. To gain the Access Diploma you'll need to achieve 60 credits with a minimum of 45 at Level 3.
