Art & Design (Fine Art) A Level

A Level Art and Design (Fine Art specification, Edexcel Exam Board) is a subject for students who take real pleasure in the visual world.

It is Fine Art based and enables you to develop an understanding of all things visual. You will learn traditional drawing and painting skills as well as new media techniques and theoretical terms. You will be encouraged to look at a broad range of artists and to review your own work in relation to the artists you have studied. There is an important written component to the coursework which necessitates analysing your own work as a way of improving and developing it.

The teaching takes place at the Creative Industries Centre, Richmond Road and students benefit from the highly creative atmosphere there, working alongside other students studying a broad range of art-related qualifications.

Course Content

The Advanced GCE in Fine Art is a two year programme leading to the production of two components of work made in the second year. Component 1 forms 60% of the overall A level grade and is made up of a Personal Investigation including a piece of written prose evaluating the work. Component 2 is Externally Set and forms 40% of the overall A level grade, culminating in a 15 hour timed exam.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 5.0 points for your average GCSE score including GCSE Art, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English Language at grades A*- C / grades 9-5.

Art combines well with other creative A level subjects including Photography, and is an essential requirement for creative courses at art colleges and universities. There are many opportunities in our design conscious world for careers which use the skills you will develop.

Additional Information

You will require your own sketchbooks and/ or A2 flip folders to present your coursework in, and a basic range of art materials to enable you to complete your work at home. You will be given advice about this at the start of the course. You will also have the opportunity to visit galleries to study artists at first hand.

The Exam Board is Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Art and Design, syllabus option 9FA0.
