Studying A-Level Physics will develop your understanding of the laws that govern the behaviours of the physical world around us, from the nuclei of atoms to the movement of stars and galaxies. This course gives you the opportunity to make clear links between Physics theory and its practical applications in real life situations, and to apply your understanding to familiar and more challenging new situations through a wide range of problem solving activities. Physics is a linear course: students will complete three exam papers at the end of their two years of study.
This is a linear A-Level course, taught over two years, with all the examinations completed at the end of the second year. Content is split into six teaching modules:
Module 1 - Development of practical skills in physics
Module 2 - Foundations of physics
Module 3 - Forces and motion
Module 4 - Electrons, waves and photons
Module 5 - Newtonian world and astrophysics
Module 6 - Particles and medical physics
Students will produce a portfolio of their practical work to fulfil the requirements of the Practical Endorsement in Physics.
At the end of the two years, students will take the following exams
Paper 01: Modelling Physics - worth 37% of the final marks
Paper 02: Exploring Physics - worth 37% of the final marks
Paper 03: Unified Physics - worth 26% of the final marks.
You will also be required to hand in your lab book to show that you have completed the laboratory practicals
This subject must be taken alongside A Level Mathematics. You must have achieved at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C / 9-5, which must include GCSE English Language at a minimum of grade 5; GCSE Maths at a minimum of grade 7 and GCSE Physics/ Science at a minimum of grade 6. Your average GCSE score must be a minimum of 5.5. You would be expected to have a satisfactory reference from your last school.
International Entry Requirements
You will be expected to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or greater, High School Certificates must be the equivalent to five GCSE at grades A*-C / 9-5, which must include GCSE English Language at a minimum of grade 5; GCSE Maths at a minimum of grade 6 and GCSE Physics/ Science at a minimum of grade 6. (NARIC will be used to check equivalence).
Duration and Delivery
The A-Level qualification is a full time course achieved over a two year period. The year begins in September and runs through to the beginning of July. A-Levels can only be studied as part of the Full Time A-Level Course, studying three subjects over a two year period.Learners will take the AS exam in year 1 which they must pass to progress onto year 2.
Kingston College has specialist science laboratories for the study of physics. There is a textbook, which students may purchase if they wish; all students will need to purchase a lab coat. The exam board is OCR and the specification is GCE Physics A (H556).
