Access to Higher Education Diploma - Music

The Access to HE Diploma - Music is designed for adults age 19+ who are aiming to progress onto undergraduate and higher diploma courses. Day time study is approximately 10 hours delivered over two to three days a week, although this is subject to change each year. It is strongly advisable to have GCSEs in English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above before undertaking an Access Diploma.  If you do not have these qualifications, you will be given the opportunity to study them at Kingston College alongside the Access course.

Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress.

Course Content

The Access to Higher Education Diploma - Music will introduce learners to the breadth of disciplines across music, music performance and music technology, through theoretical lectures, technical sessions and practical workshops students will develop the essential study skills and specialist subject knowledge to prepare them for the academic and practical rigours of undergraduate study in Music.

Topics and units on the course will include:
Music Business - Copyrights & Contracts, Ensemble Skills Using an Instrument, Developing Song Writing Skills, Music and Sound for Visual Media, The Music Industry, Designing an Event Format, MIDI Sequencers, The Practice of Recording, Musical Direction and Ensemble Skills and Extended Project

Entry Requirements

All applicants will be interviewed and will need to provide evidence of an interest in music/music technology and show their potential to achieve this qualification. At interview you will demonstrate your skills through an informal audition or the presentation of own music tracks/mixes.

Applicants will be required to be have a grade one in music theory or equivalent (or be working towards this level). Applicants are also required to have a GCSE C/4 or level 2 equivalent in English before undertaking an Access Diploma.  It is also strongly advisable to have GCSE Mathematics at grade C/4. If you do not have these qualifications, we aim to give you the opportunity to study one GCSE or Functional Skill at Kingston College alongside the Access course. 

In addition, applicants need a satisfactory reference and diagnostic screening. Applicants must have sufficient time to devote to their studies. Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress. International applicants should have an IELTS qualification score of 5.5.

Duration and Delivery

One year, part time.

Progression

Learners will be able to progress onto a wide range of music and creative related Higher Education courses including those offered at Kingston College including the HNC (Higher National Certificate) in Music and the HNC (Higher National Certificate) in Media (television).
