The Access to HE Diploma - Engineering is an ideal course for adults aged 19+ who have a keen interest in the study of engineering in Higher Education.
This course is aimed at those with employment experience wishing to take a degree or equivalent Higher Education course and is suitable for students who need further qualifications to progress in their careers, or those wishing to change career having studied Mathematics and Science earlier in their life and now wish to pursue further formal study in engineering. This includes learners wishing to change subject area having already gained some academic or vocational qualifications, learners who have studied but not completed academic or vocational subjects, or where suitable grades to enter university were not gained or learners who have been out of education for some time and who now wish to re-commence their studies.

Course ContentThe units listed below are indicative of the course content; you will also need to achieve some standard study skills units:
- Mathematics for Engineering including Algebraic Manipulation and Methods, Trigonometry, Logarithms, Exponential, Complex Numbers and Calculus, Mechanics.
- Engineering Studies including Units in Motion & Energy, Electrical Circuit Theory and Basic Electronic Skills, Engineering Materials, Health & Safety at Work, Introduction to CAD and IT, Workshop Practice.
To obtain a pass in this Access course, a student will have to achieve a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3. Total credits required: 60 for the Diploma.
Entry Requirements Due to the technical demands of this course, students need to be able to demonstrate sufficient and relevant mathematical and scientific/engineering background knowledge. In addition a good standard of English is necessary.
Before undertaking an Access Diploma in Engineering, students will need to have GCSE Mathematics at grade C/4 or above and either GCSE English or GCSE Science at grade C/4 or above, but ideally both.
A successful interview and screening test are required as well as a satisfactory reference. This course requires a maturity of approach as well as a high level of commitment and candidates must be prepared to devote serious time to their studies.
International Entry RequirementsHigh School Leaving Certificate at grade C or above (including Mathematics and English Language) or other related comparable qualifications. A satisfactory reference, IELTS 5.5 or an English Language equivalent certificate is mandatory.
Duration and DeliveryThis is a one year course, three days a week in College, September start only. The course span will be approximately 15 hours a week including a one-hour tutorial. Students are expected to undertake an additional 15 hours a week of unguided private study.
ProgressionOn successful completion of this programme, students may progress onto a range of courses at university. Successful students can progress onto a variety of Degrees. Most universities require a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3 and many require some to be achieved at Merit or Distinction.
