Access to Higher Education Diploma - Nursing

An alternative route to University or Higher Education for students aged 19+ who have been out of education for at least a year, the Access to Higher Education Diploma - Nursing is designed to give adult students, who may have left school early or have been out of education for a number of years, the opportunity to develop academic skills, confidence and knowledge before applying to university. This course requires a minimum of 90% attendance and the successful completion of 45 Level 3 credits and 15 Level 2/3 credits. The Access to HE Diplomas at Kingston College are nationally recognised qualifications and are awarded by The Open College Network London Region (OCNLR).

 

Course Content

The core subjects for nursing are Nursing Studies and Biology.The remainder of the programme will comprise of Study Skills which are designed to provide all students with essential skills underpinning learning on the course and in undergraduate study for example note-taking, research methodologies and report-writing skills. Students will be supported in their studies and UCAS application through a tutorial session.

Entry Requirements

 Candidates are required to have GCSE English Language at grade C/4 or above and Maths at a minimum grade D/3. If you do not have GCSE Maths at grade C/4 you may be given the opportunity to study this subject alongside your Access Diploma to achieve a grade 4 or above. Acceptance onto the GCSE course will be dependent on the result of an initial assessment.  A satisfactory reference must be received. 

 

Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress. Experience in a related vocational area will support your application to higher education on completion of the Access Diploma. This course requires excelelnt time management, maturity of approach and a high level of commitment throughout the year.

Duration and Delivery

One year, part time, typically two or three days a week in college.

Progression

Students who successfully achieve the Access Diploma are then eligible to apply for a degree in Nursing or a Degree-Level Nurse Apprenticeship.  Other degree courses in professions related to Health and Social Care may also be applied for.

The Access to HE Diploma in Nursing course is extremely popular and applicants are advised to apply in advance.  Please be aware that if you do not meet Home Student Residency status, you will be charged at the higher level fee.  You may be eligible for help with fees and/or childcare, depending on your circumstances.
