Access to Higher Education Diploma - Science

The Access to HE Diploma - Science is an ideal course for adults (anyone aged 19+) who have a keen interest in the study of science in Higher Education.   The course is suitable for students with a wide range of previous educational or career experiences who now wish to pursue further study in science.

  • Forensic  Science (RWTH Aachen University, Germany)

Course Content

The units listed below are indicative of the course content, you will also need to achieve some standard study skills units:


Biology - Introduction to major themes of biology such as cells, biochemistry, energy, nutrition, homeostasis, the cardio-vascular system, inheritance and laboratory skills.


Chemistry - Introduction to matter (atoms, ions and molecules), organic chemistry, equilibrium and enthalpy, measuring and explaining reaction rates, amount of substance (moles).


Physics - Application of health physics, concepts of health physics, medical imaging, electricity and nuclear physics, oscillations and waves, circuit electricity.


Maths – Graphical Methods and Algebra.

Entry Requirements

Due to the demands of this course students need to be able to demonstrate sufficient and relevant background scientific knowledge.  Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths are required.


Please note, it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress.  A satisfactory reference is also required.  This course requires a maturity of approach as well as a high level of commitment.

International Entry Requirements

High School Leaving Certificate at C/4 grade or above (including Mathematics and English Language) or other related comparable qualifications. Satisfactory reference. IELTS 5.5 or an English Language equivalent certificate. In addition a satisfactory reference.

Duration and Delivery

Three days a week over one year, September start only. Approximately 15 hours a week including a one-hour tutorial. Students are expected to undertake an additional 15 hours a week of unguided private study

Progression

On successful completion of this programme, students may progress onto a range of courses at university.
