HNC / D – Art and Design for Tattoo Artists

This creative course will give you the knowledge, creative experience and confidence to progress into a career in Art and Design with a focus on the Tattoo Industry. It is aimed at dedicated learners who want, ultimately, to move into the Tattoo Industry via an industry Apprenticeship or into further training, and are looking for practical training and a nationally-recognised Level 4 / 5 qualification. This full time course is delivered by experienced professionals who are experts and have extensive industry and teaching profiles.

 

Please note that at no time will there be skin application as this is only appropriate after your formal training and industry apprenticeship have been completed. There will, however, be application to prosthetic alternatives in the HND year.

Course Content

Skills covered are tailored to industry requirements. The course is practically driven but it also demands academic ability to build a solid grounding in production theory, industry knowledge, and business skills. The HNC year is focused primarily on Art and Design skills development and acquisition, the HND year (Year 2) will develop Industry specific skills and will allow you to refine your creative practice.

 

Successful completion of the HNC will require the accumulation of 120 credits from the modules studied. Modules studied may include:

 

  • Ideas Generation – you will express ideas using visual techniques and explore the cultural contexts of tattoo artistry and body art to develop your practice. The focus is on exploring exciting current practices in body art, body modification and wider notions of body aesthetics.
  • Visual Communications – you will produce work that communicates your creative intentions as an aspiring tattoo artist
  • Contextual and Cultural Referencing – relevant higher education research skills will be developed in a supportive and creative environment
  • Professional Practice – we will support you as you work towards establishing yourself as a Tattoo / body Artist through personal portfolio development, studio design etc.  
  • Fine Art Painting – tattoo artistry demands strong fine art skills in which you develop a steady hand and explore the visual language of colour, form, shape and tone
  • Typography Skills – explore and understand current typography practice as it relates to the Tattoo Artist
  • Drawing in Fine Art – practical exploration of contemporary and historic drawing media, processes and techniques, including life drawing
  • Business Practice in Art and design– professional freelance artists need a solid understanding of business principles and practices to ensure industry success
  • 1-2-1 and tutorial
  • Open study sessions in our dedicated facilities

 

Successful completion of the HND will require the accumulation of 240 credits from the modules studied. Modules studied in your HND second year may include:

 

  • Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation -  you will develop your own creative work using our state of the art studios culminating in an exhibition of your work
  • Work-based Experience – will ensure you have a clear understanding and appreciation of the working environment through talks from industry professionals etc. You will be supported to find and undertake a significant work experience opportunity
  • Tattoo Techniques Application and Removal – will ensure you have a firm understanding of key tattoo application and removal techniques and will take place on synthetic skin products
  • Health and Hygiene in Body Art – strong health and hygiene practices are critical for those moving into the tattoo industry to ensure legal requirements are met
  • Dermatology and Anatomy in Art Applications – treating the body as a unique canvas, you will create removable body art pieces to explore this potential
  • Personal Development through Drawing Techniques and Processes in Art and Design– you will express your creative voice through drawing-led work that will culminate in a public exhibition
  • 1-2-1 and tutorial
  • Open study sessions in our dedicated facilities

Entry Requirements for HNC

Applicants should have at least 32 UCAS points from one A-Level, a BTEC Level 3 or equivalent qualification. An interview where you will need to prove some experience of / or interest in art and design. A satisfactory reference. Mature students with relevant experience may also be considered.

For entry to the HND Year 2 candidates will need at least a pass at HNC Art and Design with a compatible unit structure, and satisfactory reference.

International Entry Requirements

High School Leaving Certificate. IELTS 5.5 or equivalent English Language Certificate. An interview where you will need to prove some experience in art and design, or equivalent. A satisfactory reference. For entry to the HND Year 2 candidates will need at least a pass at HNC Art and Design with a compatible unit structure, and satisfactory reference.

Duration and Delivery

HNC - One year, full time. Classes could be day time or evening.

Progression

Successful graduates can progress onto University (1st or 2nd year). The course also prepares graduates for access to industry and employment apprenticeships.
