BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Children's Play, Learning and Development (16-19 years)

This course is ideal for learners wanting an introduction to early years education and childcare. The knowledge, understanding and skills learnt will aid progression to further study and prepare learners to enter the workforce in due course.

Course Content

The course will consist of units that include:

  • Unit 1 Patterns of Child Development. In this unit students will understand the growth and development of a child from birth to eight years and identify how adults in early years settings can support children's development.
  • Unit 2 Promoting Children's Development Through Play. This unit investigates how play promotes children's development in early years settings.
  • Unit 3 The Principles of Early Years Practice. In this unit studnets identify the importance of inclusive practice and explore ways in which it is implemented in early years settings.
  • Unit 4 Promoting Children's Positive Behaviour. Students in this unit will identify factors that effect children's behaviour and understand how adults in early years settings can promote and support children's behaviour.
  • Unit 5 Health & Safety in Early Years Settings. In this unit students will understand how to prevent accidents and control infection in early years settings.
  • Unit 6 Supporting Children's Language and Literacy Development. Students will research how to support childrens language, reading and writing development.
  • Unit 8 Introduction to Working in the Early Years Sector. Stundets will explore roles, responsibilites and careers in the early years sector.

This course is assessed with a combination of external exams and internally set assignments. The two exams (Units 1 and 4) are taken in January and June. The remaining five units (Units 2,3,5,6,8) are internally assessed assignments.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have three graded GCSEs to include English Language and/or Maths at grade 2/3. Pass at level 1 in Functional Skills English and Maths. Selection is by interview with tutors and places are subject to a satisfactory reference.

Duration and Delivery

One year - full-time to include 1 working day on placement in a nursery setting for the duration of the course.


BTEC Firsts motivate learners and opens doors to progression into further study and responsibility within the workplace. On completion, this course will act as a stepping stone towards courses such as a Level 2 Diploma Early Years Practitioner (Licence to Practice), a Level 3 Technical Diploma or enrolment onto a Level 3 Apprenticeship course. Progression onto higher level courses is dependent on successful interview and a satisfactory attendance record (90%).

This course is run at our Kingston Hall Road Campus.

The College offer a variety of early years study options and will direct applicants to the most appropriate course dependent on GCSE grades and prior experience.
