HNC Computing and Systems Development

This qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required for success in careers in computing and systems development. It provides a progression route to the HND in Computing and Systems Development or a progression path to a degree programme at university. Students may choose to take this as a full time or part time course.

Course Content

The HNC in Computing and Systems Development has been developed to focus on:

• equipping individuals with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to succeed in employment in the computing industry;

• developing learner ability in the computing industry through effective use and combination of knowledge and skills gained in different parts of the programme;

• developing a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance in working life, enabling learners to make an immediate contribution to employment;

• providing opportunities for learners to focus on the development of the higher level skills in a computing and systems development context;

• providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills, techniques and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.


Learners will study eight units, including Business Skills and technologies for e-Commerce, Computer Systems, Database Design Concepts and programming. The second year will include a selection of units from Project Design, Website Design and Networking.

The HNC award is made on the accumulation of 120 credits, over two years.

Entry Requirements

Typical offer: 48 UCAS points from two A Levels or equivalent Level 3 qualification ideally in a related subject and/or relevant work experience.
Plus: GCSEs at grade A*-C/9-4 to include English Language and Mathematics.

International Entry Requirements

High School Leaving Certificate.  IELTS 5.5.

Once you have completed your HNC you can progress to a Higher National Diploma in Computing and Systems Development, an undergraduate degree or employment in the computing industry.

Additional Information

Tuition fees for 2017/2018: Home/EU students - £6,150 (full time option - applications are made through UCAS) or £3,075per year (part time option - applications are made through Kingston College) / International students - £9,000.
