HND Computing and Systems Development

This is a broad-based computing qualification that gives you a solid grounding in the principles of computer systems and computing. The course can lead you to a relevant BSc (Hons) computing degree at Kingston University. You do not need any previous experience or computing qualifications for entry.

Course Content

The course covers the basic theories and applications of computing. The first year provides a good understanding of computer hardware and software systems, along with the everyday skills needed for working on computer-based projects. Please note that below is an indicative list of modules and is not intended as a definitive list. The HND Award requires the accumulation of 240 credits, with a requirements of 120 credits at each of the two levels. The modules listed here may also be a mixture of core and optional modules.

Year 1
Business Skills for Ecommerce, Computer Systems, Employability and Professional Development, Emerging Technologies, Systems Analysis and Design, Human Computer Interaction, Database Design Concepts and Object-oriented programming


Year 2
Project Design and Implementation, Quality Systems in IT, Data Analysis and Design, Web Applications Development, Computer Games Design and Development, Programming in .Net, Local Area Networking Technology, Wide Area Networking Technology.

Entry Requirements

Typical offer: 48 UCAS points to include one 12-unit award or two A levels or equivalent

Subjects: Computing or analytical subject preferred; A level: General Studies accepted in tariff (16 points maximum); NVQ: Level 3 award in computing or IT; City and Guilds: Level 3 in Computing or IT; Key Skills: points not accepted in tariff but may be considered on individual basis.

Plus five GCSEs (A–C/9-4) to include English Language and Mathematics.

International Entry Requirements

High School Leaving Certificate.  IELTS 5.5.

Duration and Delivery

Two years, full time - September start


On completion of the HND, you can apply through UCAS to join the second year of a relevant BSc (Hons) computing degree. Alternatively, you could go straight into work at technician level within specialist computing companies or general organisations.
