Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation (Day Release)

This Level 2 qualification, through EAL, will give you the essential knowledge and practical skills you need to start a career as an electrician or work as electrician in the building services engineering sector. It is a replacement for the City & Guilds 2330 Level 2 Award. This qualification does not make candidates fully qualified electricians, however, it allows candidates to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the electrotechnology sector. It is suitable for those who want to gain progress onto an Electrotechnical Apprenticeship programme or help gain the underlying knowledge to progress onto an electrotechnical NVQ. It covers many areas within Electrotechnical technology, units such as principle of electrical science, electrical installations technology and health and safety within Building Services Engineering.

Course Content

The course covers the following areas:  

  • Health and safety in building services engineering
  • Principles of electrical science
  • Electrical installations technology

Year 1

This will follow the Electrical pathway of the NVQ Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations qualification. On achieving this preliminary qualification it will then be subsumed as the first year of the full level 2 Electrical Installation qualification units 201-203. The benefits are that hand skills as well as electrical skills will be developed. 

Comprises of the following units:

  • PEO2/001 Working Safely in an Engineerinf environment
  • PEO/002 Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
  • PEO/003 Using and communicating technical information
  • PEO/005 Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • PEO2/33 Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits
  • PEO2/34 Forming and assembling electrical cable enclosure


Year 2

This will follow the regular second year Level 2 Diploma.

Comprises of the following units:

  • ELEC2/01 Health and Safety in Electrical Installation
  • ELEC2/04 Electrical Installation Theory and Technology
  • ELEC2/05A Electrical Installation Methods, Procedures and Requirements
  • ELEC2/05B Electrical Installation Craft Skills
  • ELEC2/08 Electrical Science and Principles

Entry Requirements

Minimum two GCSEs at grade C/4 to include Maths, Science or English and three further GCSEs at Grade D/3, or two years' electrical work experience. All suitable applicants will be required to have a formal interview, satisfactory references and attendance record. Ideally suitable for someone already employed in the industry.

Duration and Delivery

Two years, one day a week in College.  This course is made up of two stand alone years with the option to step out and up to Level 3 after one year, if suitable employment is gained.  It is suitable for students who are over 19.


Progression routes can include employment, although not as a fully qualified electrician, or to the Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation.
