Sometimes school doesn’t work out as planned and so Pathway enables you to get right back on track and move on to greater things. Some of our former Pathway students are now at university and many are now in work - a few have even set up their own businesses! We take great pride in offering you a caring, kind and supportive setting with clear boundaries of course in which to re-start your education. You will be set personal and team-based challenges including raising awareness of different social issues through citizenship projects.

Course Content

You will have a personal tutor who will be responsible for looking after you and helping you make good progress with us.

English – following initial testing you will be placed in an English group linked to your ability in English. For some students this will be Level 1 Functional Skills in English, with the opportunity to take GCSE English in the following year. For other students they may study GCSE English in their first year of study.

Maths – following initial testing you will be placed in a Maths group linked to your ability in Maths. For some students this will be Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths, with the opportunity to take GCSE Maths in the following year. Citizenship – this is a 9-1 GCSE. It features a major community-based project, which you will carry out with a small group of students. The GCSE is assessed by written exams.

Vocational Studies - this is a BTEC Level 1 Certificate and contains different units including: Healthy Body, ICT and career development. It is assessed by continuous assessment.

Some of the course is written examination (e.g. the GCSEs) but there is also a lot of class-based assessment. The BTEC Certificate in Vocational Studies is entirely assessed by coursework. We will give you support in helping you meet the deadlines on time, every time.

Entry Requirements

We will meet with you at least twice before offering you a place in order to be sure, along with you, that Pathway is the right course for you. Part of our process at this stage is about checking your basic skills. Normally during this stage we will meet with your family/carers and also we will be in touch with your most recent school or college. A satisfactory reference from your last school or college is essential.
If you are thinking of joining Pathway in Year 11 there is an additional part to the process. You will need to be referred by your sponsoring school, or other agency. If you are a year 11 age applicant you must have permission to attend College from your parents/carers and we must receive official authorisation from the necessary school or agency.

Duration and Delivery

1 year, full time.

Pathway students can go on to GCSE or other vocational Level Two courses in the College, such as BTEC Level 2 Award in Business. A small number of our former students will go straight onto work upon successfully finishing the course.
