GCSE English Language (Adult, Day & Evening)

This part-time course is for students aged 19 or over who do not have an A*-C (9-4) in GCSE English and who wish to gain their GCSE qualification. This course is free (fully funded) for adults who have right to remain in the UK.

The course is one year, part time (September start). One lesson each week. Typically: Monday 6pm-9pm or Thursday 9.30am-12.30pm. Functional skills Day time English Level 1 classes are also offered as a stepping stone to GCSE, they are on Tuesdays 9.30-11.30am. The times and days are subject to change each academic year.

  • Entry Requirements


    It is desirable, but not essential, for students to have previously gained a grade D/3. It is not necessary for learners to have prior knowledge of the AQA specification. Acceptance onto the GCSE course will be dependent on passing the initial screening process consisting of an interview and a diagnostic assessment. A satisfactory reference must be received. Please note: your place will not be confirmed until you have completed, and passed, the initial assessment.

  • Course Content


    The GCSE English Language course will teach the AQA syllabus (8700) and will cover all the reading, writing and communication requirements for the final examination. All students will take two examination papers during the Summer term: 2023. There is also a Speaking & Listening module which must be completed during the course of study. The course will teach students how to analyse texts and understand a range of writer's methods. The program will also promote independent reading and offers a wide variety of engaging literature from the 19th to the 21st century.

  • Progression Next Steps


    An English GCSE Grade 4, or above, is a nationally recognised qualification for both employment and further studies.

  • Assessment Details


    The English course culminates in two final language exams: Paper One and Paper Two. You will have one hour and forty-five minutes to complete the paper, both papers are marked out of a total of 80. There is no longer higher or foundation papers, all students have the opportunity to sit the same paper. All students are also required to complete a Speaking and Listening exam.
