GCSE Mathematics (Adult, Day & Evening)

This part-time course is for students aged 19 or over who do not have an A*-C (9-4) in GCSE Maths and who wish to gain their GCSE qualification. This course is free (fully funded) for adults who have right to remain in the UK. The course encourages students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, mathematics and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society. The course will prepare you to make informed decisions about the use of technology, the management of money, further learning opportunities. Many of our successful learners have used this qualification to pursue careers in teaching, nursing and business.

There are two options available. Day time classes are on Tuesdays 9.30am-12.30pm or Evening classes on Tuesday 6:00pm to 9:00pm, the times and days are subject to change each year. Functional skills Day time Maths Level 1 classes are also offered as a stepping stone to GCSE.

  • Entry Requirements


    If you already have GCSE grade D / grade 3 or Level 1 Functional Skills certificate in Maths, you will be able to enrol on this course. However, we know that many learners will not have these qualifications, but this will not prevent you from joining our GCSE Adult courses. If you do not have the above qualification, you will sit an Initial Assessment to check if this is the right course for you. You will also have the opportunity to discuss your options in a short interview with our teaching team. A satisfactory reference must also be received.

  • Course Content


    GCSE Mathematics for 2022-23 is the linear Pearson Edexcel Level 1/2 GCSE (9-1) in Mathematics (1MA1). There is no coursework. There are two tiers for this qualification. Higher Mathematics covers grades 4-9, whilst Foundation covers grades 1-5. The Mathematics staff will consider progress and individual circumstances to enter students on the most appropriate tier to achieve success. The qualification consists of three equally-weighted written examination papers and it will cover the following content headings:

    • Number
    • Algebra
    • Ratio, proportion and rates of change
    • Geometry and measures
    • Probability Statistics

    On completion of this course you are expected to:

    • Develop fluent knowledge
    • Skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts acquire
    • Select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems reason mathematically
    • Make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions **Comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.
  • Progression Next Steps


    Your GCSE qualification will improve your employment prospects and will help you apply to university and other higher level courses where GCSEs are an entry pre-requisite. It will also provide a golden ticket for internal progression to many Level 3 qualification part of the South Thames College group.
