English Literature GCSE

If you are planning to do English at A Level then GCSE English Literature is an essential subject to consider. You will improve your understanding and knowledge of literature in each genre – fiction, drama and poetry – as well as developing your academic writing skills.

 

Content

This is the linear 9-1 GCSE qualification. A linear qualification means that students must sit all their exams at the end of the course in June. There are no tiers for this subject, so all students will sit the same exam paper

Students will study the following topics on GCSE English Literature:

  • A Shakespeare play and a post-1914 British play or novel.

  • A 19th-century novel and a poetry collection from the Pearson Poetry Anthology

  • Develop skills to analyse how the language, form, structure and context of texts can create meanings and effects.

  • Develop skills to maintain a critical style and informed personal response.

  • Develop comparison skills.

The course is assessed by two written exams, each worth 50% of the final marks.

Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs at grade D / 3 to include GCSE English.

Duration and Delivery

1 year, four hours per week, this GCSE can only be studied as part of the Full Time GCSE course.

Progression

English Literature GCSE is often a route to English Literature and English Literature/Language at A Level. Even if you are not planning on studying one of these subjects, this is a challenging and highly respected subject that will help you apply for other courses, and will develop your analytical ability and the way you write.

You will be provided with copies of the set texts for this course, but you will need to provide your own stationery such as a folder and lined paper.
