History GCSE

The AQA specification provides the opportunity to study History GCSE in a variety of ways: in depth, across a broad span of time, though a local context and with reference to a diversity of cultures. Through this subject students will be given the opportunity to develop analytical skills through critical analysis, research and independent enquiry. These are all desirable skills to have when moving into further education

Course Content

This is the linear 9-1 GCSE qualification. A linear qualification means that students must sit all their exams at the end of the course in June. There are no tiers in GCSE History, so all students will sit the same exam papers.

The GCSE History content comprises the following elements:

  • One period study –understanding the modern world by looking at either America, or Germany or Russia and the history that occurred during the 19th and 20th century.

  • One thematic study of an issue in the UK– looking at either public health or power and people or migration and Empire

  • One wider world depth study looking at conflict and tension

  • One British depth study – looking in depth at one of the following periods of history: Norman England; Medieval England; Elizabethan England or Restoration England.

The course is assessed by two written exams, each worth 50% of the final marks. The exam questions will be a mixture of multiple choice: structured; closed short answer and open response questions.
