Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts Practice - Dance Pathway

This course covers all aspects of dance training.  It will develop your technical and performance skills in a wide variety of dance styles.  You will have many opportunities to showcase your acquired skills throughout the year in a range of performance platforms.  You will gain knowledge and understanding of choreographic principles as well as core industry related business skills, developing yourself as an individual artist.  You will have the opportunity to combine theory and practice in an exciting and stimulating way.

The National Foundation Diploma is a one year full-time skills development year and is equivalent to 1.5 A-levels. On successful completion of the Foundation Diploma, the natural progression is to advance on to the second year Extended Diploma course.  The Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-levels.  Some mature students however may choose to progress from the Foundation Diploma one year course directly into employment or alternative training such as our Level 4 HNC Performing Arts (Dance) course.

Dance students benefit from access to three purpose-built dance studios with sprung floors and mirrors.  There are additional studios for class/workshop activity and independent rehearsals.  Students are presented with opportunities to be involved with a wide range of work experience and enrichment projects where their refined skills can be put to use in industry/vocational settings.

 

 

 

Course Content

The Dance courses consist of practical sessions, lectures, workshops and performances covering a range of skills and include core and specialised elements delivered by subject specialist staff.  Study programmes are scheduled to include GCSE Maths & English classes which are compulsory where a Grade C/4 or above qualification has not been prior achieved in one of these subjects.

  • Dance Improvisation & Contact Improvisation
  • Collaborative Performance Project
  • Site Specific Dance Performance
  • Personal Performing Arts Dance Profile

 

There are opportunities for theatre visits/trips/workshops throughout the year and we invite in professional practitioners to inspire and give industry advice.  There is considerable emphasis on group work and collaboration, so all students are expected to be committed to the group and to the discipline of rehearsal and performance. 

 

Entry Requirements

Our team of specialist course tutors interview and audition every applicant to ensure suitability for the course, audition information will be sent out on application.  Entry requirements on to the 90 Credit Diploma are: four  GCSE's at grade C/4 or above, or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma (Merit), or BTEC L2 Extended Certificate (Merit) plus one GCSE at C/4 or above.  Your grade profile must include English or Mathematics GCSE at C/4 or above.  Applicants will also need to provide a satisfactory reference.

 

Entry requirements for the Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance) are: successful completion of a Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts Practice - Dance Pathway and a satisfactory reference.

 

International Entry Requirements

Our team of specialist course tutors interview and audition every applicant to ensure they are placed on the correct course, please see audition information. For entry on to the 90 Credit Diploma, applicants will need a High School Leavers Certificate C grade or above or other related comparable qualifications. Applicants will also need to provide a satisfactory reference and undergo a practical audition if student is in the UK, video accepted from students overseas. IELTS 5.0 or equivalent certificate.

 

For entry onto the Extended Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts Practice applicants will need to have successfully completed a Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts Practice and satisfactory reference. IELTS 5.0 or equivalent certificate.

Duration and Delivery

The Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts Practice qualification is a one year full time course and is equivalent to 1.5  A-levels.  On successful completion of the Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts Practice qualification, the natural progression is to advance on to the second year Extended Level 3 National Foundation Diploma course (1 year full time).  On successful completion of the Extended Level 3 National Foundation Diploma students will have achieved the equivalent to three A-levels.

 

Progression

On successful completion of Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts Practice - Dance Pathway qualification most students continue on to the Extended Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts - Dance Pathway.  Some mature students however my choose to progress from the Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts Practice -  Dance Pathway one year course directly into employment or alternative training such as our Level 4 HNC Performing Arts (Dance) course.

 

Students who successfully complete the Extended Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts Practice - Dance Pathway can progress to Higher Education; many progress in-house onto our Level 4 HNC course, while others have achieved places at Universities and specialist Dance Conservatoires such as Rambert, The Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Trinity Laban, Urdang and London Studio Centre.  Many students will use this course as a direct step inot creative industries employment.
