Foundation Year in Science - Extended Degree in Science

The Foundation Year in Science is the first year of the four year full time Extended Degree at Kingston University. The course is aimed at students who may benefit from an introductory year to a Degree course. The Foundation Year is studied at Kingston College, which is about two hundred metres from the main University campus.

Course Content

The Foundation Year is made up of four modules each worth 30 credits.  Students must complete 120 credits at level 3 to progress onto the first year (Level 4) of their chosen degree course.

Students study Scientific Investigation & Skills and Mathematics for Science; together with:

 

  • Biology and Chemistry for: Biosciences, Forensic Science, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Science Degrees.
  • Biology and Sports Science for: Sports Coaching & Analysis, Sports Science and Exercise, Nutrition & Health Degrees.
  • Earth Sci & the Environment and either Biology or Chemistry for: Geography, Geology and Environmental Degrees.


Modules are assessed through a combination of summative coursework and examination, supported by formative exercises throughout the year.
This course is delivered at the Kingston Hall Road Centre, Kingston Hall Road, Kingston on Thames KT1 2AQ.

Entry Requirements

64 UCAS Points  from at least two A Levels or equivalent Level 3 qualification for example BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (MPP profile) or BTEC Level 3 Diploma  (MM profile).

 

Subjects: Plus GCSE A*/9–C/4 (or equivalent): minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.  Key Skills points not accepted in tariff.

 

Other entry routes: Alternative qualifications or experience will be considered which are equivalent to the typical offer. Formal qualifications are not essential but offers depend on an interview. International Entry Requirements:

Duration and Delivery

 One year, full time 16 hours a week at Kingston College followed by three or four years at Kingston University, depending on the Degree route taken. The course starts in mid-September.

Progression

Success on the Foundation Year will qualify you to study at Kingston University for a BSc Honours Degree in a wide variety of science, computing and mathematics based subjects. Full details of possible Degree routes may be found on the Kingston University website www.kingston.ac.uk.
