BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sports Coaching (RQF)

This qualification is intended for post-16 learners wanting to progress directly to employment in the coaching and development sector as an assistant coach. As well as learning about the theoretical aspects of sport coaching students will also develop critical skills such as teamwork, leadership and communication to support their progression into employment. Practical sessions will take place in the colleges industry standard gym and sports hall facilities.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional to include attendance. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criterion. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence-based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference/school report.

    For admission on to the Extended Certificate or Diploma pathway (2x A-level equivalent over two years) applicants will need to have achieved 4 x GCSE's at 4/C or above, or a Level 2 Certificate/Extended Certificate (or higher), at Merit or above, in a relevant subject.

    A retake will be required in either English or Maths alongside the Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sports Coaching.

  • Course Content


    This qualification is intended for post-16 learners wanting to progress directly to employment in the coaching and development sector as an assistant coach. In classes you will study three core units: Careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry Health and Wellbeing Sport and Developing Coaching Skills

    You will develop the skills to plan and implement coaching programmes for athletes/clients to improve their sporting performance. During this aspect of the course you will complete practical and theory lecturers working in groups and individually preparing you to understand the sports coaching industry.

    You will have a personal tutor who supports and guides you through the course. You will meet with your personal tutor for group meetings and for personal one to one meetings on a regular basis. The course will be predominantly coursework and you will be assessed in a variety of ways to develop your professional skills - for example: presentations, practical's, role plays and essays.

  • Progression Next Steps


    Most students will progress onto year 2 of the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development (2 A-Level Equivalent). Progression routes after completing year 2 will prepare you for progressing to employment and/or starting your own business in the sports coaching/development industry. Progression via UCAS points to a range of Higher Education courses such as Sports Coaching or Sport Development.

  • Additional Information


    We will give you enrichment opportunities including visits and practical hands on, work-related experiences. Activities will include visits and case studies relating to real life businesses. Sports students are invited to an oversees residential working on team building skills including numerous land and water based activities. Guest speakers are invited in to talk to students about future careers throughout the year. Early application is advisable as this course is popular.
