10th -16th October 2022 is Dyspraxia Awareness Week. One of our regular attendees at KC Active, Nanayaa, has dyspraxia and is raising awareness and helping educate us about how it affects her and others from being active.

Dyspraxia is a surprisingly common condition affecting movement and coordination. It is a hidden condition which is still poorly understood. Dyspraxia affects all areas of life, making it difficult for people to carry out activities that others take for granted.

Physical difficulties can include trouble coordinating large and small body movements. This can be a barrier to taking part in sports and activities as extra physical and mental effort is required to carry out movements that others manage easily. Poor spatial awareness means potentially more trips, bumps and bruises with the added difficulty of learning the movements required to carry out new practical tasks. Another barrier can be the difficulty in transferring motor skills to new situations or activities.

Nanayaa has been selling cookies in College to raise awareness of the impact on those living with dyspraxia as well as raising money to donate to the Dyspraxia Foundation. One of Nanayaa’s main goals this week is to attend a KC Active session every day, to challenge herself and try new activities, even if they are out of her comfort zone. Nanayaa has made a fantastic effort this week so far, joining us at multisports, football, and basketball, with 3 days of the week left we will no doubt see her again soon.

Now more than ever it is vital that everybody has the access and support to be active to improve both their physical and mental wellbeing. KC Active have sessions every day including badminton, volleyball, basketball table tennis and many more. Sessions are inclusive and staff make sure all students are involved in the sessions with extra help and guidance if needed.
