BTEC Health & Social Care students enjoyed a rewarding and informative visit to the Royal College of Nursing Library and Heritage Centre in Cavendish Square, London where they spent valuable time in the RCN’s inspirational library researching using new literature reviewing skills linked to a key unit of the course.

The students provided some fantastic feedback!

Maimoona: “The exhibitions showcased all the different equipment and materials, it was interesting to see how views and techniques have changed over the years. We also spent time in their extensive library where there was so many books related to all the different types of nursing. Overall I enjoyed the trip and it definitely made me rethink my decisions about what I want to do after College.”

Joyce: “It was so interesting to learn about the changes in how we care for people with learning disabilities, and also how nurses were treated in the past. I read a book ‘How our Ancestors Died’ which discusses how human life expectancy has increased now compared to the past due to better health care, hygiene, advanced medical care and a healthy diet.

Dulcie: “I found the trip helpful in terms of finding resources for unit 5. I found some books on autism that I can use for one of the case studies. The information and history around nursing was also interesting.”

Roksana: “I learnt about how religion was used in nursing in the 1950s and 60s. I enjoyed finding books in the library which was very beneficial for my course work – I found so many books which I didn’t know existed, one on mental health disorders, and there were so many types of books about autism for example.”

Maryam: “On the trip I learnt about religion and nursing during WW2. Nurses who were religious believed it was a service called for by God to help others. I also learnt about the stresses nurses had from 1998, which nurses today also relate too. I also found a book about prostate cancer that I can use for unit 14.”
