Former Access student, Katie Colbran, has graduated from Lancaster University having completed a MSc Advanced Relationship Based Social Work Practice with Children and Families. Katie is now working in a Frontline Child Protection Team in the North East of England.

Katie commented: “I am doing amazing work which is both heart-breaking and rewarding. I owe it to my Kingston College tutor, Sue Brahams, because if she hadn’t shown me what I was capable of I would not be able to do what I do. Thank you so much for believing in me. You told me I was an exceptional student when I didn’t believe in myself and I will always be grateful. I was so afraid back then – now I lead teams and it’s because you showed me I could. Students need to know their dreams can come true.”

Katie’s lecturer, Sue Brahams, commented: “Katie joined the Access to Education and Teacher Training Diploma with very few qualifications and studied English & Maths GCSEs alongside her Access course to ensure she was eligible for undergraduate study at the highest ranking universities. Katie was a model student, from the outset, and, like many Access students, overcame challenges of managing home and personal commitments alongside an intensive programme of study. Katie never waivered in her dedication to her subjects or in her determination to realise her academic and professional potential. We are so proud of Katie and the inspiration she provides for current and future adult students – she is a perfect example of what can be achieved by following an Access course.”
